New John Carter Poster Online
And a new tagline revealedThe title may not be the most obviously sci-fi ever, but we're still pretty excited about John Carter (not yet Of Mars). After all, it's directed by Andrew Stanton of Wall-E and Finding Nemo fame; it's based on a kick-ass series of pulpy adventure novels set on another planet, and the footage we've seen so far looks rather beautiful. Now there's a new poster for the film, which not only echoes the cover and colour of one recent Barsoom compilation but makes it a little clearer what's going on.{New John Carter Poster}After all, here we see Taylor Kitsch's John Carter in all his nappy-wearing glory, surrounded by the clearly alien shapes of the green Tharks against the background of the Red Planet. If that doesn't get across what's going on, we're not sure what will. The new tagline, too - Lost In Our World, Found In Another - neatly sums up Stanton's approach to the story and Carter himself:a disaffected post-CivilWar mess back on Earth finds himself a new life on Mars.John Carter hits cinemas next March 9. If you can't wait until then, you can read much more about him in an upcoming issue of Empire.

Bad News, Julia Roberts: Mirror, Mirror's Online Praise Might Be Studio-Generated
Last week, you and I watched the first trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror, Mirror in slack-jawed horror. (After all, aren’t Snow White adaptations supposed to be about the titular princess and not Julia Roberts’s aging concerns, Bollywood dance numbers and Armie Hammer’s impression of a dog?) Surprisingly though, not all of the Internet’s feedback was negative. A few brave souls commented on the Relativity trailer enthusiastically — and now MovieMavericks.com is claiming that some of those suspicious thumbs-up reviews came from the same source. MovieMavericks.com points out that several “strangely optimistic comments” posted to their own Mirror, Mirror trailer write-up originated from the same IP address. Upon Google-searching those comments, MovieMavericks discovered that the same IP address user had posted the same positive reviews on other movie websites — leading them to believe that either A) There is just a very dedicated Brooklyn-based Tarsem Singh fan who is hellbent on raising the bar for Mirror, Mirror buzz. Or B) The studio (or a party involved with the film) is having someone do some web damage control on the atrocious-looking trailer. Among the copied and pasted positive remarks that MovieMavericks.com cites: · “Julia Roberts is going to be awesome as the Evil Queen. She’s such a good actress!” · “Definitely seeing this with my boyfriend! Can’t wait to see Lily Collins in action!!” · “Tareem [sic] Singh makes awesome movies. Immortals was amazing and this will be too.” For the record, the only positive comments that the trailer received when Movieline posted it last week were from user Laurietimes2 (“Count me in!!!”) and Rom Issy (“Beautiful scenery and costumes, fairytale story and a comedy? That rocks. In.”). Most commenters only had negative feedback though, exclaiming “AHAHAHAHAHA…oh wait, you mean it’s not a comedy?” or comparing it to a “90s ABC Disney TV-Movie musical” and calling Lily Collins’s Snow White “a plain looking woman with Dan Hedaya eyebrows!” Do you think that the strangely positive remarks about a trailer that looks exceptionally bad is studio-related? Please let me know in the comments section below after watching Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer in the Mirror, Mirror trailer. Maybe you’ll discover that the film is “definitely worth seeing” upon second viewing. · Mirror, Mirror Astroturfing — Who’s Behind It? [MovieMavericks.com] via Who’s Faking ‘Mirror Mirror’ Praise? Our Snow White-colored starts off since the fairytale princess everybody knows and love after which it she progresses in to a youthful lady along with a fighter, nonetheless its no edgy version in the story or possibly a far more dark version. Scorsese's 3D learning curve
Richardson Martin Scorsese and his crew mulled the idea of shooting "Hugo" in 2D and converting it, but decided it needed to be shot in 3D -- though they quickly discovered the process required them to rethink "everything" about filmmaking, the helmer said. The learning curve was steep since they had no prior 3D experience. Scorsese told Variety, "My goal here was to try to tell the story with this added element of depth, to use depth as narrative because most people see in depth." "None of us had done 3D before," said "Hugo" production designer Dante Ferretti, who has now worked on eight films with Scorsese. He found their latest effort especially challenging because of the sheer detail required by 3D, which, he quickly realized, cries out for meaningful detail to fill the depth it creates in front of the camera. "It's very important to put a lot of stuff in that space," Ferretti said. Much of "Hugo" -- set in the 1930s -- takes place at Paris' Gare de Montparnasse train station and inside its clock tower, various parts of which Ferretti constructed on massive sets at several London-area soundstages. "We did tests and realized we had to add details to the clocks, machinery, gears and pipes because for 3D to work well, you always have to have many objects before you," Ferretti added. The creative approach on "Hugo" was almost the polar opposite to that of "Immortals," the subject of this column two weeks ago. That Tarsem Singh-helmed, vfx-intense saga relied largely on greenscreen technology for its backgrounds and was shot in 2D and converted to 3D; in comparison, "Hugo" was shot stereoscopically and used huge, elaborate physical sets, with vfx supervisor Rob Legato adding only the background extensions. Cinematographer Robert Richardson was both "excited" and "daunted" by the prospect of his first 3D shoot, which also happened to be his first digitally shot feature. He used Arri Alexa cameras paired on a Pace rig. The early considerations of shooting in 2D and doing a conversion were on the table "for reasons of economics," according to Richardson, "but Marty always wanted to shoot on 3D and there's no question that if you're taking 3D seriously, capturing it that way is vital." Sorsese looks forward to further technical advances. "You're talking more than 3D, you're talking holograms," said the helmer. "That's where it's going, ultimately It doesn't have to be science fiction. You can do 'Hamlet' in hologram." Bookings & Signings

Russell and Scott Millan have been tapped to work on "Skyfall," the 23rd James Bond film, at the new Technicolor post-production sound facility on the Paramount lot, where they were recently joined by fellow re-recording mixer Anna Behlmer. The Legal Battle Over Who Gets To Say "YUUUP!" On TV
Dave Hester, star of A&E's Storage Wars, is fighting a rapper over use of the signature catch-phrase, "YUUUP!" Noooope[1], this ain't a joke. Hester has filed a lawsuit against Trey Songz (bornTremaine Neverson) and is seeking a court order that bars the rapper from "interfering" with his use of "YUUUP!" Attorneys for Songz sent a cease-and-desist letter to Hester that demanded the reality TV star stop uttering the phraseduring the show's auctions of seized goods, according to the NY Post. The rapper says that"YUUUP!" has been his "signature sound" since at least 2009, but evidently, he failed to trademark it. According to a search of trademark records, Hester registered"YUUUP!" on three occasions, dating back to this past May. Besides, Hester saysthat the two uses of "YUUUP!" sound different. Songz' version, according to the complaint, "resembles an animal-like or non-human squeal which begins with a distinct 'yeeee' sound before finishing with a squeal-like 'uuuup' sound." Songz doesn't appear to have a trademark, but could have theoretically gotten one on the sound of the word itself. As one court interpreting the USPTO's standards put it, ""A sound mark depends upon aural perception of the listener which may be as fleeting as the sound itself unless, of course, the sound is so inherently different or distinctive that it attaches to the subliminal mind of the listener to be awakened when heard and to be associated with the source or event with which it is struck." It's a high threshold. Harley-Davidson learned this the hard way about a decade back when it unsuccessfully attempted to register a sound mark on the syncopated chug of its idling V-twin motorcycle engine. Of the tens of thousands of trademarks registered, just a fraction of those cover sounds. Examples include the roar of the MGM lion and NBC's three-note musical chime. Getting a sound mark on a catch-phrase is even more rare, but there have been bells of victory[2]for a few companies that have pulled it off. The silver medal for best sound mark goes to 20th Century Fox, which registered in 2008 a mark consisting of the spoken word, "D'OH," the famous Homer Simpson utterance. But the gold has to go to Comcast's Versus network, which in 2009 got a sound mark on the word, "HOLY," being uttered, followed by a bleep, with a cymbal and a descending electric guitar slide in the background. As in, "Look at our ratings! Holy (Bleep) ((Vvvvvvv))" If Songz happens to read this post and realizes that he should have gone to the U.S. Trademark Office to get a sound mark on"YUUUP!" he'd best be careful about exclaiming, "D'OH," or saying "HOLY" followed by be some bleeps and other strange sounds. Sutro's: The Palace at Lands End
A November Fire Recordings and Garfield Lane production. Produced by Strephon Taylor, Tom Wyrsch. Directed, written by Tom Wyrsch. With: James R. Smith, John Martini, Barbara Johnson, Steve Brown, Jim Dickson, Ernie Fosselius, Richard Tuck, Dan Zelinsky, Sam Singer, Marilyn Blaisdell, Dan Fontes.Recalling the once-imposing San Francisco attraction that offered myriad entertainment options from the fin de secle until its demise in the 1960s, "Sutro's: The Palace at Lands End" plays like an extra-long version of the custom-made historical videos that play every half-hour in local museums. While the docu is unlikely to attract much interest outside the Bay Area, it figures to settle in comfortably at the city's Balboa Theater, where Tom Wyrsch's previous featurette, "Playland," about another defunct S.F. attraction, played months to nostalgic natives. Now just a set of ruins on a cliff near the entrance to the Golden Gate Bridge, Sutro's (better remembered as Sutro Baths) was once the splendid last word in fun emporiums. After making over the Cliff House, which had begun to attract a rough crowd, Prussian-born engineer and entrepreneur Adolph Sutro set his ambitious sights on adjacent land overlooking the ocean. There he commenced building the world's largest collection of bathing facilities, which held nearly 2 million gallons of water (pumped in from the sea, one freshwater tank aside) and were supported by 517 private dressing rooms. The 1896 grand opening was delayed until Southern Pacific gave in to then-mayor Sutro's demand it provide direct streetcar service. Twenty-five cents got you not only entree to the seven pools, but a towel and bathing suit as well. Olympic-style competitions were regularly held, observers seated in balconies that could hold thousands. Swimming was hardly the only diversion on tap, however. Among further amusements that set up shop in the huge complex were a wax-tableau Last Supper, a talking-bird show, an ice rink, kitschy museums and a "Musee Mechanique," whose surviving player-piano-type gizmos provide the docu's score. Spectacular and popular as it was, the operating costs were a money pit for Sutro, who died in 1897. Its operation was taken over by his daughter Emma, who started to shutter and sell off parts of the superstructure. As it gradually fell out of fashion despite makeovers (notably one undertaken to compete with the 1939-40 World's Fair on Treasure Island), time and neglect took their toll. Surprisingly, there seems to be relatively little vintage film footage extant. We do get clips from Don Siegel noir "The Lineup," one among few commercial features that used the colorful structure as a setting, and 1971 cult fave "Harold and Maude," which deployed its subsequent ruins. On the other hand, there are a wealth of archival photos, many saved from the dumpster by a former gift-shop employee. The mix of talking-head reminiscences and visual evidence, divided into chapters, is unimaginative and bare-bones, with stilted use of an occasional narrator. But what the docu lacks in polish, it will no doubt make up in nostalgia value for its target audience.Camera (color, HD), Strephon Taylor; editor, Taylor; sound, Taylor. Reviewed on DVD, San Francisco, Nov. 5, 2011. Running time: 84 MIN.
Narrator: Ray Taliaferro. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Tarantino May be Equipping Sacha Baron Cohen for Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino’s next film Django Unchained has a cast that — so far — includes Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kurt Russell, but the director is rumored to be squeezing in an extra star: Sacha Baron Cohen. Borat’s guerrilla buffoon is reportedly up for the role of Scotty Harmony, a slave owner who buys Broomhilda (Washington) as a “female companion.” I expect an HBO spinoff series about this kooky slave ownership called Da Simon Legree Show. VIDEOS: The Biggest Failed Jokes at the Academy Awards "Perhaps the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences thinks it has inoculated itself against exposure to homophobia, but we'd ask, have they forgotten "Delirious," Mr. Murphy's famously scabrous rant against all things gay?" writes the NY Times' Media Decoder blog. "And no, we aren't posting a clip, thank you.Mr. Ratner, whose coarseness is legendary, seems positively refined by contrast." Adding, "The Academy's quick retreat from Mr. Ratner -who was being relied on to assemble the stars, acts and movie lore behind the show- means that it now has no film-oriented producerless than four monthsbefore the show and a host who is hardly bulletproof when it comes to charges of homophobia. Cue slippery slope." Actor Jeffery Self wrote for the Huffington Post, "This is what I have to say to Mr. Ratner:Maybe your bones aren't prejudiced, but your mouth seems to be, and that's a serious problem for which you need help.I don't think you get to say a word like that and expect us to let it go. You don't get to apologize for both using that word and making a false statement about Olivia Munn in the same breath. Saying you lied about Olivia Munn isn't sending a message of hate from the producer of the Academy Awards to some scared gay teen in Kentucky, but the other thing you said is." "There's not really a long, nuanced debate to be had about this," opined Grantland blogger Mark Harris. "If he had used an equivalent racial or religious slur, the discussion would go something like, 'You're fired.' Apology or not. The same rule applies here. You don't get a mulligan on homophobia. Not in 2011." "Well, this is pleasing, I'm not going to lie," said TV.com's Seth Abramovitch. "Brett Ratner-the egomaniacal movie director who is a walking, breathing parody of how the world generally perceives Hollywood people to look and behave-will not be producing this year's Oscars. What that means for the fate ofEddie Murphyas host, who, let's be honest, was looking more and more like anan unmitigated disaster-to-be, is up in the air. Let's hope he's part of the exit package. He continues, "The reason, believe it or not, isn't that everybody suddenly snapped to their senses and realized that Ratner is an insufferable hack who's been readying an Oscars telecast of roughly the same sophistication level as you average Pirelli calendar shoot.Rather, Ratner himself resigned in the wake of a growing uproar over a comment he made to an L.A. audience who'd come to hear a Q&A about his new movie,Tower Heist." Adding, 'He's the perfect embodiment of the profound mediocrity and idea-vacuum that the motion picture industry has become." If the Academy Fire Brett Ratner as Producer from the Academy awards?
Throughout a publish-'Tower Heist' Q&A session on Friday evening in La, director Brett Ratner stated "practicing is perfect for fags" when requested by a crowd member if he rehearses moments before filming. So, yeah, that isn't good. Ratner has since apologized for his comments inside a statement towards the Wrap: I am sorry for just about any offense my remarks triggered. It had been a dumb method of indicating myself. Everybody you never know me recognizes that I do not possess a prejudiced bone during my body. But like a storyteller I ought to happen to be a lot more thoughtful concerning the energy of language and my selection of words. Meanwhile, at Grantland, Mark Harris is rallying for that Academy to alleviate Ratner of his Oscar creating responsibilities. I have needed to pay attention to versions of each one of these mea-not-quite-culpas through the years and seriously, I am no more thinking about with patience seeing the slow arc of the public figure's learning curve. Things I do worry about is exactly what the Academy does, that ought to be with the idea to request for and receive his resignation in the show in order to drop him because the producer of the show that's designed to represent the very best the needs to offer. There's not just a lengthy, nuanced debate available relating to this. If he'd used a similar racial or religious slur, the discussion would go something similar to, "You are fired." Apology or otherwise. Exactly the same rule is applicable here. You do not get a mulligan on homophobia. Not this year. Grantland does not possess a leaving comments system, but we all do! And that we are very curious that which you consider this case. Bear in mind: if Ratner is fired, Eddie Murphy (that has their own questionable history with this particular slur from his comedy special offers 'Delirious' and 'Raw') is most likely gone. That should not be considered a element in a choice such as this, however it kinda does -- also is why it is extremely unlikely that Ratner is going to be fired. So, you are responsible for the Academy awards. (Champion!) Knowing that you might lose Murphy should you fire Ratner, where do you turn? Is his apology enough, or perhaps is Harris in demanding that Ratner step lower or perhaps be changed? Fire away within the comments section below. Joel Edgerton May Be 'The Guy From U.N.C.L.E.' or perhaps the New Gerard Butler
Poor Joel Edgerton didn't cash luck along with his fall twosome of 'Warrior' (sadly not seen!) and 'The Thing' (fortunately not seen!), so that it visits reason he may decide to up his profile having a couple of sure things soon. And therefore here' am! Not only is Edgerton co-starring in 'The Great Gatsby,' but she's his pick of two high-profile approaching projects, according to Vulture: Steven Soderbergh's 'The Guy From U.N.C.L.E.' as well as the '300' prequel. Vulture reviews that Warner Bros. offered Edgerton charge role in 'U.N.C.L.E.' despite the fact that Bradley Cooper was apparently the most effective choice a few days ago. This comes several hours after Vulture also reported that Edgerton was the studio's pick to steer '300: Fight of Artemisia.' (Seems like Edgerton has some large fans round the Warner's lot.) Edgerton hasn't recognized either role, but forthcoming nexus s he'll grab one. After passing up on charge in 'The Bourne Legacy' to Jeremy Renner, dude warrants a relaxation. 'Project X' Trailer: The 'Paranormal Activity' Of Party Movies?
After "Paranormal Activity 3" scared up a big opening weekend, it was clear that the found footage genre isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The latest addition to the club is "Project X" from producer Todd Phillips, the director of "Old School" and "The Hangover." This time, the camera doesn't document a demon or a witch or giant monster destroying NY City. The disaster this time around happens to be a giant party destroying a suburban block. "Project X" follows a group of high school students, the main character played by Thomas Mann, who throw the most out of control party of all time for their one chance to be cool. It's kind of like if the people in "Cloverfield" never left the apartment from the beginning. The trailer shows off a party that doesn't look that much crazier than a relatively big high school party. Everyone is dancing. There are raging hormones abound, but that's not really what "Project X" is about. Things naturally get out of hand. There is alcohol everywhere, sex, flamethrowers, dogs doin' it, and a car driving into the pool. Oh, and one of those inflatable moon bounces. The end of the trailer even shows a good chunk of the block on fire. "Project X" is helmed by first-time director Nima Nourizadeh based on a story from Michael Bacall, who co-write "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" and co-wrote the screenplay for this film with Matt Drake. Mann, Jonathan Brown, Oliver Cooper and Alexis Knapp star in the film. Check out the trailer over at Apple. "Project X" hits theaters March 2, 2012. Stick with MTV Movies Blog for the latest movie news and trailers. What do you think of the "Project X" trailer? Does found footage work with a party?
